On December 22, 2015 Governor Abbott violated his oath of office, which calls for him to "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States and of this State," when he ordered the removal of a holiday display that had been placed, with official permission, in the rotunda of the Texas State Capitol. The display, placed there by the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), depicted George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and the Statue of Liberty looking adoringly at a copy of the Bill of Rights lying in a crib. Abbott's excuse is that he found it to be "offensive to Christians." Even if that was true, Abbott's order, which proves he has no respect for the Bill of Rights, is offensive to lovers of liberty, a blatant violation of the First Amendment right of freedom of speech, and the act of a dictator and tyrant. In its January-February membership publication, Freethought Today, the FFRF announced it is filing a lawsuit against Governor Abbott. The Freethought Press of Texas not only hopes they win but also calls on the state legislature to impeach the governor for violating his oath of office (which we realize is unlikely to happen with a Conservative Christian Republican majority in the State House).
